Simulation Analysis of a Wildfire Suppression System
نویسندگان
چکیده
Rekindles and false alarms are unusually high in the Portuguese wildfire management system, representing a high burden on suppression resources in particular, and fire management resources in general. In 20,049 occurrences that the suppression system handled in the summer of 2010, 12.5% were false alarms and 15.0% were rekindles. We present a discreteevent simulation model of a wildfire suppression system, designed to analyze the joint impact of primary fires, rekindles and false alarms on system performance. The work contributes to fill a research gap concerning that impact, and features a novel application of simulation to suppression systems, as screening tools to support more holistic analyses. The model was implemented in ®ARENA, and used for a study of a Portuguese district. We found that reducing false alarms and rekindles to benchmark values would significantly reduce pressure on firefighting teams, enabling more effective suppression operations.

Burning down the house: Wildfire and the benefits of natural disaster mitigation
For more than a century, government wildfire managers have aggressively suppressed wildfires within western U.S. forests. In that time, our understanding of the ecological benefits of wildfire has improved. Nevertheless, it has been politically difficult for managers to limit suppression effort, even for relatively non-threatening wildfires. As wildfires within the western U.S. become more freq...
متن کاملDEVS-FIRE: design and application of formal discrete event wildfire spread and suppression models
DEVS-FIRE is a discrete event system specification (DEVS) model for simulating wildfire spread and suppression. It employs a cellular space model to simulate fire spread and agent models that interact with the cellular space to simulate fire suppression with realistic tactics. The complex interplay among forest cells and agents calls for formal treatment of the fire spread and fire suppression ...
متن کاملVFire: Immersive wildfire simulation and visualization
The destruction caused by wildfires has led to the development of various models that try to predict the effects of this phenomenon. However, as the computational complexity of these models increases, their utility for real-time applications diminishes. Fortunately, the burgeoning processing power of the graphics processing unit can not only mitigate these concerns but also allow for high-fidel...
متن کاملDynamic Data Driven Application System for Wildfire Spread Simulation
Wildfires have significant impact on both ecosystems and human society. To effectively manage wildfires, simulation models are used to study and predict wildfire spread. The accuracy of wildfire spread simulations depends on many factors, including GIS data, fuel data, weather data, and high-fidelity wildfire behavior models. Unfortunately, due to the dynamic and complex nature of wildfire, it ...
متن کاملExamining heterogeneity and wildfire management expenditures using spatially and temporally descriptive data
Increasing costs of wildfire management have highlighted the need to better understand suppression expenditures and potential tradeoffs of land management activities that may affect fire risks. Spatially and temporally descriptive data is used to develop a model of wildfire suppression expenditures, providing new insights into the role of spatial and temporal heterogeneity in determining expend...
